What Is Minimally Invasive Therapy?

March 25, 2020

There are many prostate related problems that a man can experience in his life.  This includes erectile dysfunction, bladder cancer, kidney stones, infertility, and more.  The list of possible problems that could occur is long, and because of this, almost all men will experience some sort of complication with their prostate at some point in their life.  At Luzato Medical Group, we know that when we’re resolving these complications, that surgery is not always an option.  Due to this, our urology doctor in New York offers minimally invasive therapy to our patients.  The two minimally invasive therapies that we provide are microwaving the prostate gland and green light laser therapy.  (Related:urologist New York, urologist Manhattan)

Microwaving the Prostate Gland

This procedure is used to treat urinary symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate.  During this procedure, a urology doctor in New York will insert a specific foley into the prostate through the urethra.  The foley will then release microwave energy to heat and destroy the excess prostate tissue that’s blocking urine flow.  The advantage of this procedure is that it will reduce the symptoms caused by the enlarged prostate, but also leave the sexual function untouched.

Green Light Laser Therapy

Green light laser therapy uses a laser beam to remove prostate tissue.  During this procedure, the urology doctor in New York will insert a laser fiber into the urethra through a catheter.  The laser will then heat and vaporize the excess prostate tissue, allowing for a larger channel for urine to pass through.
The advantage of minimally invasive therapy is that the size of incisions are limited, meaning faster healing time, as well as less hospital time, pain, and chance of infection.  Although most men will have prostate problems at some point in their life, there are preventative measures that you should take.  We recommend an annual examination by our urology doctor in New York, along with a PSA blood test so that we can treat any necessary areas as soon as possible, preventing any further issues.
