Male Circumcision Facts

Male circumcision has been practiced for thousands of years and it divides countless races on the ethics of the actual procedure. Its origins have always been debated but recent studies indicate that it was originally practiced in Ancient Egypt. There are both pros and cons to the procedure and countless cultural rituals behind the practice but here are the top three things you probably didn’t know about male circumcision.
Methods Used
The majority of circumcisions performed in the US are done with one of three tools: the plastibell, gomco clamp and the mogen clamp. The latter is a scissor-like object that consists of two flat blades used that are clamped over the foreskin. This cuts off blood flow while a scalpel is then used to remove the tip of the foreskin. The gomco clamp is inserted between the head and the foreskin. Next, the surgeon clamps the device over the foreskin cutting off circulation. After a few minutes, the blood around the clamp will begin to clot and the surgeon uses a scalpel to remove the foreskin. This method is known for possibly leaving a light brown scar on the head of the penis. The third method is done by means of a plastibell which is a plastic device placed over the head of the penis, beneath the foreskin. The physician will then proceed in tying a string around the foreskin to cut off circulation. The string is used as a guide for the surgical removal of the foreskin or in other cases; the plastibell may be left for a few days so the dead foreskin will fall on its own. These three methods may be performed at Luzato Medical Group by your local Urologist New York.
It was considered a Symbol of High-Status
The increase in hospital births as well as the idea of circumcision being synonymous with hygiene contributed to the rise of the procedure in the United States. Since only those who had the money could afford a hospital birth years ago, it was thought that a circumcised penis was a symbol of affluence. This created the social norm that all male members of the high-classes were to be circumcised. This put pressure on all parents that wanted their boys to be “normal”.
The Foreskin is very Complex
The foreskin is just a part of the penis as an eyelid is to your eye. It is made up of mucous membrane and the level of moisture makes it the ideal location for bacteria as well as sexually transmitted infections. The foreskin also contains a cell which is targeted by the HIV infection which is known as the Langerhans cells.
Numerous studies have been conducted that show the health benefits of having newborn boys circumcised so whether you’re pro or con you should keep in mind that it has been proven to keep the penis cleaner as well as prevent countless infections. A Urologist New York City at Luzato Medical Group can advise you on the exact procedure and whether or not it will benefit your child.
