Recent medical evidence shows that some erectile dysfunction drugs can be toxic to the light-sensitive cells in patients’ eyes. This is one of the many reasons you should consult with a specialist before taking any medication for ED. (Related topics: urologist in Manhattan)
CNN recently reported that a man’s vision changed dramatically after taking a drug commonly used to treat ED that he bought online. According to the physician’s report, the 31-year old patient purchased an unspecified form of sildenafil citrate, which is the same active ingredient in Viagra. However, the patient acquired this medication from an unofficial and non-pharmaceutical online provider.
The patient drank directly from the bottle and felt the side effects on his eyes immediately. He started to see flashes and his vision turned red. The doctors who took his case still can’t tell with certainty how much of the drug the patient ingested. Nevertheless, they believe the dosage taken by the patient was above the one usually recommended.
Although the flashes went away soon, the red tint in his vision remained. One of the doctors on the case explained that it is of utmost importance to take these drugs always following the doctor’s indications and never exceeding the suggested doses. Although the standard dose of sildenafil is perfectly safe, exceeding it may have severe consequences.
“This is not a common situation,” said one of the doctors, and he continued to add that in the past some cases have been registered in which patients have complained about experiencing blurry vision that resolves within a few hours. However, sometimes patients take 4 or 5 times the suggested doses.
In spite of being uncommon, sildenafil is known to cause temporary changes in the patients’ vision such as blurry vision or temporary vision loss but these are usually resolved within a day and only in rare cases. Furthermore, when patients arrive with vision problems to the ER after taking Sildenafil, there’s usually something else involved such as hypertension medication. As the pressure lowers so dramatically, not enough blood reaches the brain.
The recent medical findings show that sildenafil has an impact over an enzyme on the penis tissue and that due to its similarities with another enzyme found in the eyes, the drug can have an effect on them too.
