Symptoms of Low Testosterone

April 26, 2021

Testosterone is the male hormone that regulates fertility, muscle mass, fat distribution, and red blood cell production.  That being said, when a man has low levels of testosterone, it can have a huge impact on his body.  This could happen because of a man’s diet, lifestyle choices, age, and even environmental factors.  One of the main symptoms that men notice when this happens is their inability to get an erection, but there are other symptoms that our urologist in New York wants you to take note of.

Hair Loss

Hair follicles in the skin convert testosterone into DHT (dihydrotestosterone).  Since the body only needs a small amount of DHT, an excess of this can actually lead to hair loss.

Trouble Sleeping

A balanced testosterone is related to healthy sleeping habits and it’s a vicious cycle when it gets distrubed.  This is because low testosterone can cause disturbances with sleep.  Even worse, lack of sleep can cause the body to use extra testosterone during the day, which lowers the levels even further.

Reduced Bone Mass

Testosterone is one of the components that helps produce bone tissue and maintain bone volume.  When your levels of testosterone are low, it directly affects the bone tissue and causes you to be more susceptible to injuries.

Reduction in the Amount of Semen

Low testosterone has a direct connection with low levels of semen.  This is why one of the complications that come with low testosterone is trouble with fertility.

Decreased Energy Levels

When you have a hormonal imbalance, then it’s likely that you’ll experience fatigue.  Even if you are getting an adequate amount of sleep, you can be affected by this.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, talk with your urologist in New York about treatment plans.  There are different options that we’ll suggest, depending on your personal situation.
