ED and Heart Attacks

“Beware of erectile dysfunction or it may kill you”. Well, that might be a bit of an overstatement because it is unlikely that ED will kill you all by itself but there’s appalling evidence of the connection between erectile dysfunction and heart attacks, strokes, and other cardiovascular diseases. The first thing you have to do at the first sign of erectile dysfunction is booking an appointment with your physician. Your doctor will order some tests to identify the underlying cause of your ED and rule out any serious problems that may be interfering with your ability to get or maintain an erection.
Whilst the connection ED shares with cardiovascular diseases is well-known, a new study revealed that the link between these conditions is even stronger than what was initially believed. The research was conducted amongst 1,900 between the ages of 60 and 78 and it was revealed that the men in this group suffering from erectile dysfunction were twice as likely to report suffering from a heart attack or another cardiac event during the four-year study period than those men who didn’t present signs of ED.
Furthermore, the usual suspects were also taken into account as risk factors for more accurate results. Just like it was expected, smoking, high blood pressure, and other elements traditionally associated with erectile dysfunction played an important role in the research.
As explained at the beginning, the bottom line of the study was even though erectile dysfunction won’t kill you by itself, it is an accurate predictor of a potential cardiovascular condition that might threaten your life sooner than later. Henceforth, it is highly recommended that at the first signs of erectile dysfunction you seek health from a physician who should screen you for any of the aforementioned conditions even if no other symptoms associated to those conditions are present.
This study was recently published by the American Heart Association in its journal with the purpose of building on previous knowledge of the link between ED and poor heart health. In fact, one of the main causes of erectile dysfunction is cardiovascular disease, as some of these conditions might decrease blood flow to the penis and subsequently diminish the ability to achieve and maintain an erection.
Amongst the other causes of erectile dysfunction is the hardening of the arteries that carry blood through the heart. If these arteries are hardened or somewhat obstructed, it’s more difficult for blood to flow easily through the arteries, potentially leading to blood clots, heart attacks, or strokes.
