What Is a Cystoscopy?

June 30, 2020

Urology is the branch of medicine that focuses on surgical and medical diseases of the male urinary-tract system and reproductive organs.  That being said, at Luzato Medical group, we offer our expertise to resolve issues such as premature ejaculation, bladder cancer, kidney stones, pelvic pain, prostate cancer, and more.  When we treat these issues, we aim to use minimally invasive therapy, but sometimes a patient may need a cystoscopy.

A cystoscopy uses a narrow instrument that has a lighted camera attached to the head of the scope called a cystoscope.  The cystoscope is inserted through the urethra and moves into the bladder, allowing the urologist in New York to see inside of the lower urinary tract.  If the urologist in New York City identifies any abnormalities, he will take a sample of the tissue.  They are usually utilized when CT scans can’t give the urologist in New York a clear idea of what the issue is.

Many clients worry that this procedure will be painful, but it’s not as bad as people often expect.  Of course it is a little uncomfortable, but the patient shouldn’t feel any intense pain.  Sometimes local anesthetic gels are utilized to numb the urethra, making the procedure more comfortable for the patient.  For the next couple of days after the procedure is done, it’s normal for the patient to feel a little discomfort when they urinate.

When a cystoscopy is performed, the urologist in New York will be looking for bladder stones, abnormal tissue, polyps, tumors, or cancer in the urethra or bladder.  They are also able to identify if the urethra is narrow, which could be an indicator of an enlarged prostate or scar tissue in the urethra.  The urologist in New York City can discuss what they were able to see with the patient shortly after the procedure.  If a sample was taken, however, it may take 2 to 3 week to get the results.

If there are any concerning irregularities, the urologist in New York City will identify the problem and come up with a treatment plan.  If you are experiencing any changes, such as blood in your urine, pelvic pain, or repetitive urinary tract infections, make sure to set an appointment with us at Luzato Medical Group.  The sooner we can identify the issue, the sooner we can treat it.
